MANUFACTURER PROVIDED DESCRIPTION
The Island Packet 40 was introduced in 1993 to replace the Island Packet 38. Island Packet produced 137 hulls between 1993 and 2000.
Designed with Island Packet Yachts' exclusive Full Foil Keel, the Island Packet 40 unifies the performance attributes of modern hull and foil designs with the superior safety, enhanced steering qualities, and more seakindly motion available only with a long keel. This feature brings numerous benefits to the cruising sailor: superior protection from damage or fouling of prop and rudder, an integral hull and keel construction for the strongest possible unified structure, a moderate draft with exceptional stability characteristics for shallow water gunkholing or worldwide voyaging, and winning performance capabilities.
Full-length cabin top handrails, double lifelines with welded bow and stern rails, recessed foredeck with bulwarks, and a premium, slip-resistant surface of a contrasting low-glare gelcoat all contribute to offshore safety.
Forward, the integral bowsprit-anchor platform increases sail area, improves sheeting angles for enhanced windward performance, and provides ready stowage and immediate access for ground tackle.
The 8-foot long cockpit has full-length contoured seats offering plenty of room for comfortable sitting or stretching out.A premium, console-mounted rack and pinion steering system is employed for its exceptional feel and rugged reliability. Integrated into the custom steering console are the single-lever engine control, compass, and flip-up cockpit table.
The cutter rig used has furling systems on both the genoa and self-tending staysail. The skipper has a variety of sail combinations available that are readily adaptable to maximize comfort, safety and performance over a wide range of wind and sea conditions. The generous sail plan, utilizing three simply managed sails, coupled with the easily-driven, long-waterline hull form, assures excellent light-air performance.
Belowdecks, two double staterooms, well-separated for privacy, and each with an adjoining head and shower, combine with an expansive central living area to provide a gracious setting. Overhead handrails, bulkhead handgrips and an easily maintained, molded slip-resistant cabin sole offer sure-footed movement while underway.
The wraparound galley is equipped with a host of detail features for both convenience and safety. The L-shaped settee in the main salon can be quickly converted to an extra double berth with its built-in pullout panel.
Forward, there is an elegant, full-width owner's stateroom, with generous stowage. The aft stateroom is similarly roomy and inviting and has a huge double berth.
The engine is mounted on a molded engine bed with an integral drip pan. Fastidious mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are all in evidence here and are easily accessible through a removable front panel, hinged side panels and an aft cover.
All Island Packet 40 structural laminates and internal reinforcements are designed to meet or exceed rigid ABS standards for offshore yachts. Hulls are molded of knitted triaxial roving, offering vastly superior impact and puncture resistance compared to conventional woven rovings or cored construction. Deck laminates are engineered for high-strength with reduced weight, utilizing Island Packet's exclusive PolyCore system. Interior construction features an engineered grid system and reinforced fiberglass structure fully bonded with the hull to form a unit structure of immense strength and durability.
ACCOMODATIONS
The Island Packet 40 has an extremely desirable 2 stateroom, 2 head interior layout which provides exceptional accommodations for extended cruising for two couples.
The forward Owner's Stateroom has a large Pullman Berth to starboard with a bureau and double hanging locker to port. Forward of the stateroom is a spacious fully enclosed Owner's Head, vanity and shower area and teak shower seat.
The Main Salon has a port single settee with ample storage outboard and beneath. There is a hanging locker at the forward end of the settee. The starboard L-shaped settee converts to a double berth and has storage outboard and beneath.
The Dinette Table is bulkhead mounted, fold down with storage behind. When in the down position and with leaf extended, it will accommodate 6 adults easily.
The aft portion of the starboard L shaped settee doubles as the nav seat for the aft facing Navigation Station/chart table.
The spacious U-shaped Galley is aft of the nav station. The galley features a Princess 3 burner stove, large top loading refrigerator/freezer, a SS double sink and ample counter space.
On the portside aft of the salon is the second fully enclosed guest head, shower and vanity which is accessible from either the salon or the private aft guest stateroom which is immediately adjacent aft.
The aft guest stateroom features a very large berth with dressing seat and large hanging locker. The entire interior is completed with satin varnished teak offset by the exceptional teak and holly sole. Light and ventilation is provided by 13 opening S/S ports with screens, 7 deck hatches and 4 dorades.

OWNER'S COMMENTS
Carpe Diem is more than just a boat to us. She’s home. She’s a vessel that turned our wildest dream into an attainable reality. We bought her a knew we wanted to cruise through the Caribbean so we decided to do a shakedown cruise from the West coast of Florida to Stuart where she had her first big refit at Mack Yacht Services. Chainplates and standing rigging were replaced, as well as, additional solar and some new electronics were installed. She was ready for her first Caribbean adventure with us on board.
We cruised through the Abacos, got to wake up to the most beautiful sunrises and anchor in front of some of the most pictures, us islands in the Bahamas. We took advantage of dinghy adventures around every cay and explored new reefs and hiking trails every day! We did not want to leave this paradise, but with Atlantic hurricane season officially upon us, we made way back to Florida. From there our plans quickly changed when she was struck by lightning, causing several electrical systems to fail. Knowing we could no longer continue cruising in this condition, we made our way back to the West Coast of Florida, where she had her second and biggest refit under our care. She had almost all electrical systems replaced and made new by Snead Island Boat works, who are highly experienced in dealing with lightning struck boats, and they did an amazing job!
When we boarded Carpe Diem, after this refit, it was like stepping onto a brand new, high-tech boat! We took a few days to get moved onto the boat, learn and troubleshoot the new systems, wait for the right weather window and made way to Key West Florida en route to the Exumas! We celebrated Christmas and New Year’s with fellow cruisers in the most unique and memorable ways, Cruisers Beach Christmas Potluck with a blazing bonfire and a Yacht Club New Year’s Eve party at Staniel Cay. We left our mark at Cruisers Beach, with our first piece of cruising memorabilia, a homemade bench, and wen helped bushwhack the hiking trail leading up to 360° views of the Anchorage and the Atlantic Ocean.
Sadly, for us, it’s all too soon for the worthy girl. But we’ve made so many incredible memories on her, met some amazing people who share similar dreams, and even learned that we will be adding to our crew with the birth of our first daughter. So for now, it’s a sad goodbye to Carpe Diem as we prepare for the birth of our child, but she has allowed us to get a glimpse of the magic and beauty of traveling the ocean. She is a vessel that has made that is made to be at sea, and our hope is that her next owner takes her on new adventures that enrich the lives of those aboard. Carpe Diem!
