aboard this extremely well-kept Tor 40.
Comfortable for extended cruising to far off locations, Aloft is also highly
competitive in classic yacht races as attested to by numerous podium finishes in

Hull Construction
The hull is constructed of tropical hardwoods (primarily ipol / merbau and yacal woods) using the double-plank system whereby the inner layer is run diagonal to the centerline and the outer is run linear (carvel).
The hull girder is further strengthened via ipol / merbau or yacal major structural members to include the stem, keel, horn timber, structural floors, clamps and transom frame.
The ballast keel is constructed of cast lead, externally mounted and fastened using large stainless steel. keel bolts.
The centerboard is cast bronze.
Hull planking is fastened using silicon bronze screws which are bunged over.
Bulkheads and partitions are constructed of marine plywood, securely fastened to adjacent floors and framing. The ballast keel is cast lead and fastened using stainless steel keel bolts on varying centers.
The hull of ALOFT is exceptionally well-built and shows no obvious signs of distortion such as hogging, drooping or twisting when sighted from all positions.
Plank seams, faying surfaces and the ballast keel to garboard seams appear tight.
Interior compartments and bilges appear generally clean and well-maintained, a sure sign of signs of good upkeep and care
Above waterline thru hulls (2ea bilge pump discharge) are of cast Bronze construction
Below waterline thru hulls are bronze tapered plug / seacock type
Hull planking below the DWL was refastened using #12 silicon bronze screws by Warren Pond Boatworks in 2018.
Deck and Cockpit Construction
The foredeck, side decks and stern decks are constructed of marine plywood with FRP overlay with painted (non-skid and smooth exterior finish and White painted undersides.
The decks are framed using ipol / merbau beams run transverse on varying centers.
The hull to deck joint appears secure and utilizes the toe rail and its fastenings for added strength.
The cockpit has varnished mahogany coamings which form backrests and to which the primary winches are mounted at the outboard face.
The cockpit seat tops and sail locker lids are teak planked with black seam compound.
There are scuppers fitted at the toe rails and cockpit deck to allow for drainage of residual deck wash.
The cockpit was replaced as new by Warren Pond Boatworks in 2018.
Cabin House Construction
The superstructure / cabin consists of a low-profile cabin trunk with highly cambered roof.
The roofs are framed transversally using sawn ipol / merbau beams on varying centers.
The roof / cabin top is of marine plywood with FRP overlay and painted exterior and interior surfaces.
The cabin sides, front and back are of solid mahogany with varnished exterior and painted interior surfaces

Auxiliary Propulsion and Fuel Systems
Engine: 2019 Nanni (model N4-38), 4-cylinder, fresh water cooled, naturally aspirated diesel engine

Transmission: 2019 ZF marine transmission (model 12-M) w/ 2.13 to 1 ratio.
Engine vital signs are monitored via analogue type gauge panel mounted at the cockpit (not tested).
The engine and transmission are controlled via (2) single lever mechanical controls fitted at the steering pedestal.
The engine and transmission are securely mounted to steel adjustable mounts which are bolted through the main (ipol / merbau) stringers.
The drive train consists of a 1” diameter ss. shaft which passes through a wooden shaft tube and exits the sternpost with a Cutlass type bearing.
Compression gland (flax-packing types propellor shaft stuffing box
The propeller is a 14” diameter, bronze, fixed (2-blade) type.
The engine is heat exchanger cooled.
Groco raw water filter / strainer
The exhaust system consists of a cast iron mixing elbow which connects to a stainless-steel pipe, FRP water-lift muffler and wet-exhaust type hose which discharges at the transom.
The stainless-steel section of exhaust piping is heat shielded via glass cloth in the engine compartment.
The engine room is vented naturally via plastic scoop vent at the lazarette.
There is “Soundown” acoustic insulation nicely fitted in the engine room.

The mast is supported by 1×19 stainless steel wire rope shrouds, fore and backstays and is fitted with (single) aluminum oval section spreaders.

Mast is keel stepped and fitted with a new aluminum partner and mast step which is securely mounted to a large aluminum bearing plate which is notched into the structural floors.
Running Rigging:
Running rigging to include sheets and halyards are a mix of braided Dacron, nylon rope and 7X19 stainless steel wire
Sail Trim and Sail Handling Equipment:
Sail trim is achieved via original self-tailing mechanical winches mounted at the cockpit outer coamings. Tracks and cars are mounted at the walkways adjacent to the main cabin trunk and Blocks are of synthetic type of varying size as required for task;
the majority by Harken.

Interior layout described from bow to stern
Furthest forward is chain locker followed by forward sleeping cabin with accommodations for two (2) persons with bunks in a V-berth configuration.
Continuing aft is passageway to main saloon with head area to port and storage lockers to starboard. Main saloon is laid-out in traditional fashion with pilot berths and settees port and starboard outboard of a drop-leaf dining table on centerline.
Furthest aft are galley and navigation areas port and starboard with engine access and companionway ladder on center line. The cabin interior is finished Herreshoff style with white painted exposed surfaces and ceiling and varnished trim and joinery. The soles are teak plank w/ black seam compound. The resulting ambiance is warm and functional.
